Yes, the tapes are incompatible, but there is a simple patch you apply with adb to st.o that fixes it. We read 3.5 dump tapes with no trouble routinely here (our users keep deleteing files they "desperately" need :-< ). I can send the patch, or, it may be useful to note that the patch is present in the st.o that comes off the 4.0.1 Sun OS patch tape.
