I bot bit by what I consider to be a major omission in the 4.0.1 installation instructions. Here is what the problem is: The 4.0.1 READ THIS FIRST tells the user that there is a README file. This file details all of the fixes and allows the user to decide which one he/she wishes to install. The README also discusses kernel rebuilding at the end of file. If a user goes to the README, he is likely to use directions found in the README, rather than READ THIS FIRST. README does not include the READ THIS FIRST warning about the need to install a new boot block if you install the lgkernel fix. If you install the lgkernel fix and don't install a new boot block, but do reconfigure your kernels and halt the system. You are then unable to reboot your system. Booting munix from 4.0 distribution tape and then trying to do the installboot command as shown in READ THIS FIRST does not work. Instead, you need to mount your root partition (probably to /mnt), and issue the following command: installboot -v /mnt/boot bootdd /dev/rdd0a where dd is your disk type. The installboot omission in README got me. It took over 2 hours of my time to discover the fix and get a working system. Personal Answerline was unaware of the problem of mounting your root partition and using the /mnt/boot portion shown above (they tried to help, but....) Also, why does the new yppasswd not push the passwd change? Is this to be a 4.0.2 fix? When will the rumoured 4.0.2 be out?
