[comp.sys.sun] Sun-3/60 memory errors

jlp@cs.utah.edu (Jan L. Peterson) (01/11/89)

Does anyone know what this message means from the diagnostic monitor:

Memory test
  Err 2 Addr 0x00001030 Exp 0x7A972C5A
         Obs 0x5A972C5A Module 0x00000000

If I try to reboot, the Addr number above changes, the others do not. I
have swapped the SIMMs with another sun and the problem remains.

Any ideas on what chip is bad or what else may be causing this message?
This comes out on serial port A with the diag switch on. I get nothing on
the console monitor with the diag switch in either position. This is a
Sun-3/60 with color monitor. SunOS 4.0 if that is important.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I had an error like this, with changing memory addresses, on my 3/60. In
my case, the kinds of changes were the clue: it was a particular set of
bits that were different, and be doing a little guessing about which simms
were for which address range, I identified the bad simm, checked my guess
by moving the simms around (and watched the bad address range change),
replaced the bad simm (with one from Helios), and all is now perfect.

Don't know if this will help but approximately three (out of about 12) Sun
3/60s we received developed various errors or had them from day 1. They
were of the sort "Watchdog Reset" and then various memory errors. Since
they were new machines (with test dates in Aug/Sept. 1988; received in
Oct. 1988), we took them apart and checked the contacts and gave the
memory chips a "push" to make sure they were all seated properly. Once we
did that, they all came back to life and have been purring along just
fine.

Hope this helps in your situation... Are they relatively new machines?
