A while ago I posted a request for help, looking for a short cut for installation of 4.0.1 on a 386i. Since apparently everyone who owns a 386i has been sent a copy of 4.0.1, there should be a lot of interest. Despite a good collection of responses, no one came forward who'd actually done what I wanted to do, i.e., figure out how to do the install without doing a complete backup and restore. Nor did I get any magic answers from Sun. So... I ended up doing it the long way. Responding to a few things mentioned in the responses: 1) I've been using X11R3 fairly heavily under both 4.0 and 4.0.1. I haven't seen any greater likelihood of it crashing under 4.0.1. 2) One recently posted message referred to not being able to run YP (and possibly NFS?) across versions. Not true. At the moment I have 3 386i's, two running 4.0.1 and one running 4.0, and all three are using a Sun3 running 3.5 as the YP server. In addition, the 4.0 386i has most of it's user partition cross mounted aon a 4.0.1 386i. We don't use automount; that might make a difference. Chris
