[comp.sys.sun] Xy 753 cables?

brian@natinst.com (Brian H. Powell) (01/25/89)

We've had a Xylogics 753 and a Fuji M2372K for some time now. We've
recently cannibilized our PDP-11 and have a couple of (don't laugh) Fuji
M228X disk drives we want to hook up.

The Xylogics documentation isn't terribly good for describing how to make
your cables. It's pretty straightforward how you handle the B-cable,
since there are four B-cable connectors on the Xy 753. Since there's only
one A-cable connector on the controller we have to share that one among
the three disk drives we have.

Near as I can tell from the disk drive docs, you can either hook up the
A-cable as a daisy-chain configuration or a star configuration. (And you
have to terminate the end(s).)

It seems pretty straightforward how to daisy-chain, since the old M228X
drives had two A-connectors just for that purpose (and we put the newer
M2372K (with only one A-connector) at the end). I'm concerned that there
will be a performance degradation if we do that. Any comments? Our 2372K
is our biggest, most important drive, so if we could avoid slowing it
down, I'd like that.

If we don't daisy-chain, any suggestions on how to make the cable? Any
tricks to it?

Also, does anybody know what you call those connectors that are on the
Xy753? I'm used to DB connectors with nice big pins. I haven't ever seen
those small tight pin jobs before, so I don't know what to ask for. (I'm
no cable/connector expert.)

     Thanks for any help.
