[comp.sys.sun] 'Big' disk for 386i

BYKAT@UTCVM.BITNET (Dr. A.Bykat) (02/10/89)

We have a Sun386i/250 equiped with a 91 Mb disk and a 60Mb cartridge tape
in a peripheral box. We have almost exhausted the disk (no surprise) and
would like to add a bigger disk (322Mb or even 600Mb). Sun wants $6600
(retail) for a 322Mb disk, but I am sure that we could do much - but much-
better than that. If you have added a third party disk to your 386i,
please let me know your experience. thoughts recommendations and/or
caveats. Thanks!

Alex Bykat
PS. Even with 35% educational discount, the price seems to me way too
high for a disk to be housed in that peripheral box.

I have just finished adding a Maxstor 8760S (760MB Raw, 650MB formated)
disk to my 386i. It went easy enough, so here is what I did.
1. Kludge a mounting bracked for it, as I don't know where to get one
2. Plug in the disk, which I bought from ATS in San Jose
3. edit /etc/format.dat to add the parameters for the disk.
4. run /etc/format, select disk sd0, type it, partition it, label it.
I ran into trouble here, the disk is supposed to be 1630,2=1632,
but for some reason, after 1615/14/24 it is unreadable, so I backed
it off to 1613,2=1615, I loose 6MB, but it works fine.
5. add entries to fstab, make the mount point /files1
6. reboot.

It works fine. I am now in the process of trying to make automount points
for it.
