[comp.sys.sun] MC 68881 for Sun 3/50

ehrlich@shire.cs.psu.edu (Dan Ehrlich) (02/15/89)

Can some kind soul out there with a 68881 equipped 3/50 take a peak at the
chip and tell me what the Motorola part number is for it? We have a bunch
of 3/50s that were ordered without the 68881 and now want to upgrade them.
Sun claims all we need to do is go out to `Radio Shack', buy the chip and
plug it in. Unfortunately the local sales folk have no idea what the
Motorola part number is for the 68881 that goes into a 3/50. Appearently
the 68881 comes in a variety of speeds and packages, etc. Please respond
via e-mail, unless you feel the whole list would benefit from this. Any
assitance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

MC68881RC16A was the original version of the chip. It costs about $175.
There's a new revision of the chip out from Motorolla, the MC68881RC16B
that's about $135 and seems to work fine in our 3/50s.

Whatever you do, don't get the MC68881RC12A, etc. that's a 12MHz part.
You want a 16MHz part.

If you can't find an electronics house that can give you the chip (I
couldn't), call Motorolla directly and they'll give you a list of who you
can get them from in your area.

We put 68881's in our 3/50's a while ago. Details of the procedure can be
found somewhere in the sun-spots archive. (I'm afraid I can't find a copy
on-line here, but I'm sure it's in the archives from about febuary or
march 1988). In a nutshell, you order a MC68881-RC16A (mask A93N or
higher), plug it in, and you're done. We paid about $145 for them a
little over a year ago. I doubt Radio Shack would have the part (nor
would I trust it if they did) but Newark, Schweber, Avnet, or any of the
other big mail-order places should be able to get it for you. Maybe even
Allied, Radio Shacks parent company.
