[comp.sys.sun] I need some info on DEC's LAT protocol

root@philabs.philips.com (Admin) (02/16/89)

We have a Sun network here and also a lot of DEC equipment. Currently we
are running SunLink DNI 6.0 on our Suns (one sun 3/160 servers everyone
for DNI...yes it is running SunOS 4.0) a SET HOST or DNILOGIN works
fine....but we want to be able to connect to the Sun from a DEC terminal
server without talking through the VAX. So what I need is some info on the
DEC LAT protocol so I can write a program for the suns. Once I write that
our sun will look just like a DEC computer (right down to Mail, Phone,
Send, CTerm, FAL and all the other DEC goodies.....Now I just need LAT)

The main reason I need to use LAT to our suns is because this university
is putting in a lot of DEC terminal servers and currently there are very
few connections to the Suns. Also most of the modems may be put on the
terminal servers.

If you can help me, or you need some other help with SunLink DNI
                    PLEASE SEND ME E-Mail!
(BITNET if you can, it's quicker than uucpnet)

Last I heard, LAT is DEC proprietary and confidential and you can't.
Period. Full stop. End of story.

The *moral* of the story is, don't buy DEC terminal servers.

I recommend installing some type of ALM card on one of your Suns. Use
reverse LAT to connect a terminal server directly to the Sun mux ports and
then define services for that terminal server. This would be far less
costly than trying to do your own LAT driver (which by the way I believe
is a DEC proprietary protocol.)

A side comment: I personally believe it is a bad idea to send mail as
root. We have no idea who you really are! Doing as little as possible as
root usually works best. Less chances for error.
