[comp.sys.sun] raster images wanted

subra@cbnews.att.com (R. Subramanian) (02/10/89)

I am interested in getting some raster images for sun. I have heard of the
existence of a node from which I can ftp the stuff. Does anybody know the
identity of this node? Please reply by mail. Thanks.

You probably want the Poskanzer Bitmap Collection which is available via
anonymous ftp from EXPO.LCS.MIT.EDU [18.30.0.212] in
/contrib/poskbitmaptars. It's HUGE -- only transfer this at night.

The bitmaps are stored in X11 bitmap format, so if you're not using the X
Window System, you'll also want to get /contrib/pbm.tar.Z which will allow
you to convert them to Sun Rasterfile format (as well as a variety of
other formats).

Unless I missed some, all these images are monochrome.

Don't forget to use binary mode!

Black and white sun rasters of various things are available via anonymous
FTP from pawl.rpi.edu (128.113.10.2), in pub/backgrounds/ and in three
subdirectories (actually links to other raster caches on the system) named
more1, more2 and more3. Subjects range from anime to people to cartoons
to art and more.

Additional rasters can be found on surya.waterloo.edu, which you'll
probably have to reach via 129.97.129.72 because almost every darned
machine at waterloo only has an MX record in the host masters. They carry
both black&white and colour rasters in images/sun; all of their black and
white rasters are also available on pawl.

(Tony Kusalik ... I need an address to return your tape. Please email
me your postal address. Thanks.)
