[comp.sys.sun] 8 bit telnet problem with SunOS 4.0.1

rossc%extro.ucc.su.OZ@uunet.uu.net (Ross Cartlidge) (03/16/89)

When I connect from a Bridge CS/200 Terminal Server with the "XMITBINARY"
option set (it enables 8bit telnet connections) to a Sun386i running
4.0.1, the telnet session locks up after the login prompt.

Has any one else has this problem?

In article <352@extro.ucc.su.oz> you write:

It's my understanding that SUNOS Telnet does not support binary mode. (We
had a similar problem - we traced the session, and saw that the Sun telnet
was refusing binary mode).

Sun says that this is because BSD Unix doesn't support it, and that code
is unchanged BSD code. They say they plan to get in the code and fix this
"real soon now". By the way, we also noticed that telnet doesn't terminate
xmitted lines right. As I recall, they don't send 2 characters like they
are supposed to (our software always had to time out at the end of every
line - made for very slow transfers)
