We have a Sun which is connected to another via a leased telephone line. They currently talk UUCP. It would be nice to make them think that they are both reachable via ethernet, and have a translator or something running constantly between the two serial ports which transferrs the ethernet packets transparently to the systems. A few years ago I saw a Unix manual page describing such a program, called "/etc/ttylink" I think. Has anyone heard of such a beast? Steven Christensen International TechneGroup, Inc. decvax!cvbnet!thor!iti!svc [[ Don't know about ethernet-level linking, but you can get an Internet-level link with Serial Line IP, or "slip". There is an implementation of slip for both the 3.x version of SunOS and the 4.0 version. We have used both with success. Both implementations are available in the Rice archives under "sun-source" as "slip.shar" (for the 3.x version) and "slip4.0.shar" (for the 4.0 version). They can be retrieved via anonymous FTP from the host "titan.rice.edu" or via the archive server. For more information about the archive server, send a mail message containing the word "help" to the address "archive-server@rice.edu". --wnl ]]
