I don't know about the Sun386i, but as far as the Sun-3 goes, SunOS 3.2, 3.5, and 4.0 have always been capable of supporting 19,200 and 38,400 baud (this verified both by trial and by examining source code). Several of our developers regularly run terminals at 38,400 baud (the Televideo 955 is capable of this). The man pages for all three SunOS versions only mention speeds up to 19,200 baud, but stty understands 38,400 baud, and /usr/include/sys/ttydev.h defines 38,400 baud. In sum, I doubt that there is a "TTY patch tape 5.4" or any similar item enhancing the Sun-3 kernel to run higher serial line speeds, since it already does.
