[comp.sys.sun] followup: 3/60 rebooting randomly

eli@chipcom.com (Steve Elias) (03/30/89)

thanks to all those who responded. apparently, many folks have had random
reboot problems. things to watch out for: static, and power brownouts or
spikes on the AC power line.

i had begun to suspect power problems when our two 3/60s rebooted at the
exact same instant. another time: a guy touched a Marathon Bridge (802.3
to 802.4 bridge) in my office -- slight static discharge -- my machine
rebooted.

we are going to try to find some good surge protecters. the 3/60 i am
using now has been less prone to these power problems. its AC power is
coming from a double daisy-chained power strip! perhaps the surge
protectors in power strips really do something useful.

Steve Elias (eli@chipcom.com) recently reported problems with static
(among other things) causing his 3/60s to reboot. I thought I'd add one
more piece of information along the same lines.

We had some serious static problems at a prior worksite and found
anti-static carpeting too expensive a solution. We solved the problem by
treating the carpets with a static control spray. The spray we used was
called Ramsey Static-Contorl Spray, manufactured by:

	Ramsey Carpet Cleaning Products
A Division of Warco Labs, Inc
	24020 Frampton Ave
	Harbor City, CA 90710

I also seem to remember someone telling me that a Woolite/water mix
sprayed onto your carpets every three months will help control static. I
don't know how much credence to put into that method, but it is almost
definitely cheaper than the Ramsey Static-Control Spray and certainly
harmless to try.
