I need to remind all potential posters of the two different addresses associated with Sun-Spots: Sun-Spots@Rice.edu for submissions to the digest Sun-Spots-request@Rice.edu for administrative requests (such as adding and deleting addresses to the main list, mail problems, etc.) If you are reading messages via the Usenet News system ("rn", "readnews", etc.) then posting an article to the "comp.sys.sun" list will usually send it to the right address. However, I have noticed some problems with that procedure. I get multiple copies of some messages (presumably because some site is running an old version of the news software) and others seem to be sent to the wrong address (the "request" address). So "post at your own risk". Secondly, sources. I have not been processing sources much at all lately, because I am waiting for "comp.sources.sun" to be created. We are currently in the "voting" phase on "news.groups" and after two weeks I have only received one "no" vote. So things look very good for the group's creation---it's just a matter of time (on the order of a few weeks). So please refrain from sending in sources until we get the new list set up and going. If you sent source in and have not seen any mention of it yet, then allow me to apologize. I'm putting as much of it off as I can. The current means of distribution is not very effective.

The number of messages coming in to Sun-Spots is continuting to overwhelm me. In the past 24 hours, I have received 72K of submissions. Things are slowly becoming unmanageable. In one attempt to organize this information in some fashion, I have started categorizing messages by topic. I have identified seven topical areas in which to place messages. My intent is that one digest will contain messages about one or possibly two topics. The seven areas I am starting with are: 386i (everything specific to the RoadRunner) Hardware (both Sun and third party) Software (including most "standard" software) Networking SunOS (especially kernel and management related) Windows (OpenLook, SunView) Miscellaneous I think this will make things go faster and it will certainly help readers ignore topics they don't care about. The format of the digest header will change just slightly when I start using these areas. Instead of "Today's Topics" there will be a line labeled "Digest Topic" followed by one of the above subject titles. Then the list of subjects will be identified simply as "Contents". Usually when a list becomes overcrowded like this, it indicates that it is time to start creating more lists. I would like to start moving some of these topics to other lists. For example, Sun-Nets for network issues. Another clear area that could be split off is the 386i. Is anyone interested in starting a mailing list dedicated to the discussion of the Sun 386i? If you are, let me know and I will tell you what you need to do to start one (it's real easy). A SunView list might also be an idea to consider. Something needs to happen soon, because this list is reaching critical mass. William LeFebvre

I was completely swamped last week with a proposal that had to go out the door. I am now sending out digests that should have gone out a week ago, which is why it seems that you are getting issues a week late. Expect alot of digests this week as I catch up. William LeFebvre
