[comp.sys.sun] Sun 4/280 Performance Question

nctingue@ndsuvax.bitnet (Mark Tinguely) (04/26/89)

Our department is considering purchasing a Sun 4/280 as their working Unix
(tm) Operating System. There has been speculation by some department
members that the system can exceed the below requirements. I, personally,
have had limited experience with the Sun line and no experience with their
SPARC line. I would appreciate any and all comments on the below
questions. I will even summarize to the net if the interest is there.

Is anyone using a Sun 4/280 for anything but a workstation? In particular
what is the maximum number of active (not just sitting at the terminal)
users can the system take with decent response times.

Would it be unreasonable to have 50 to 75 people concurrently on a Sun
4/280 editing, compiling, executing medium to large sized programs while
also having a few LISP, Prolog and Ingres processes also executing?
