If you set your root password to anything with more than 8 characters on a Sun386i you won't be able to log in from the console as root! (still can 'su' though). I say at times, because my user login passwd is longer than 8 chars, and i can't remember how i managed that (e.g. set up account using SNAP first, then as root, wipe out the passwd field in /etc/yppasswd, login, give myself new password, ... and variations thereof) Accounts that I set up now with passwd > 8 chars does not allow console login.
