[net.unix-wizards] Does anyone know what /usr/lib/font is?

We have a version of UNIX System III running on  an  ONYX  C8002.
We  find  that  we have a directory called /usr/lib/font which is
not described in any of our  documentation.   Does  anybody  know
what  these  files  are  for,  what programs use them, what their
format is, etc.
