[[ This message is the entire digest. If you aren't interested in database software for the Sun, then you can skip this digest. --wnl ]] Attached is the latest availability information for most of the major DBMS vendors. Our intent is to update this every couple of months. The vendors included are Information Builders (Focus), Informix, Interbase, Oracle, RTI, Sybase, and Unify. This information was provided and verified by the responsible vendor Product Manager. Hopefully each vendor has updated their own field organizations with targeted release dates, but we have seen this is not always the case. It is definitely not our intent to contradict the DBMS vendor - we encourage you to involve the local DBMS vendor people in sales situations when that is what the customer wants. If you get contradictory information from the local DBMS vendor representatives, then contact SSD Marketing (Nancy Colwell, Margo Davis, Kevin Moultrup) to help resolve it with the relevant DBMS vendor corporate marketing people. We encourage you all to share DBMS information and problems on dba@kauai. thx, Mike Scott, SSD Database Engineering Manager INFORMATION BUILDERS INC. The following attempts to contrast them: Unify 4.0: Most recent Unify version of the DBMS Unify has been selling for years. Until very recently Unify has not been allowed to sell this on Sun hardware unless included with ACCELL. This version does not support transparent network access (also called RDA or remote database access). ACCELL 1.4: Application generation system sold by Unify for use with Unify 4.0 or SunUnify 3.0. SunUnify 3.0: Sun's version of Unify 3.2 with the ERIC interface, network support (RDA), and a few features/bug fixes from Unify 4.0. Unify will take over the selling and support of this product on SunOS 4.X-based versions on the Sun-3/ 4/386i at the end of CalQ2 (NOT Sun-2 or SunOS 3.X). SunSimplify 1.1 was also shipped along with SunUnify 3.0. Stay tuned to announcements from SPD regarding new Simplify developements. There will be a migration path for existing SunUnify 3.0 customers to Unify 2000 with ERIC/RDA at the end of 1989 for those SunUnify customers that need the power of Unify 2000. Unify 2000 1.0: New DBMS with much greater power, performance, SQL support, reliability, and functionality than the existing Unify 4.0 or SunUnify 3.0 products. The initial release will not include an ERIC or RDA interface. ACCELL/SQL: Version of ACCELL specifically targeted for Unify 2000. -SunUnify 3.0/SunSimplify 1.1 were removed from Sun's price list 12/88. Unify Corporation is now gearing up to sell and support these products late in CalQ2, so there is a window of 6 months where orders cannot be placed. Sun will support existing SunUnify/SunSimplify customers as late as 12/31/89, although as soon as Unify is ready, we want want to encourage existing supported customers to quickly migrate to Unify's support organization. Details on the entire plan will be distributed by Margo Davis sometime in April - letters will be sent to all existing supported Unify customers after the Sales force and TSEs have been notified.
