Hello, out there!
I need some info about two "upgrade" problems:
1. Does SUN offer an upgrade 3/280S ---> 3/480S (that would be a
CPU-upgrade)?
2. SUN now has 32MB-memory-boards. A 3/480S seem to support both 8MB and
32MB boards (up to a total of 128MB). Is it possible to put the 32MB
boards into a 3/280S? If not, why doesn't it work? Is it possible
to put more than 32MB into a 3/280S?
The "official" answer (our friendly sales rep...) is:
1. CPU-upgrades only 3/280S ---> 4/200 (but we need 3/... no SPARC!)
2. No 32MB boards into a 3/280S. Reason unknown.
Both answer make me wonder! Are there technical reasons? Or should we
throw flames against marketing? Any comments? May be from SUN?
P.S.: Two "features" about SUN marketing:
The basic network-workstation are configured with "standard 4MB
memory" - even the 3/80. But SunOS 4.x machines should have at
least 8MB (so says SUN)!
At least in Germany the 3/50 aren't gone. You may order them. You
ask for the price? More than 80% of the list price for a 3/80!
FLAME: SUN MARKETING!! THIS IS RIDICOLOUS!! GET SERIOUS!! flame off.

I don't think you can put more than 4 8M boards in either. Another limitation. Dunno if its the backplane or what that is the limiting factor. If the MC68030 can handle it it would make sense that upgrade could. We were wanting it for our 3/260's.
