There are some patches to f77 1.1 for system(), fork(), and this problem...
Ask for the read_libI77 patch.

Fortran 2.1 should have this fixed and is supposedly shipping.

Ask for all the 6 patches to Fortran. All three libraries lib{F,I,U}77.a
have bugs fixed on this tape; so does f77pass1 and ratfor. It's really 
worth while to install all of them.

Sun was shipping this tape already last year, if you bothered them 
enough.
