I just updated the sun-fixes directory on uunet to include both the fixed version of wall and the 4.0.3 libc.so and libc_pic.a files. the 4.0.3 libc.so runs fine on 4.0, 4.0.1, and 4.0.3 for sun3 and sun4s. Feel free to (re)announce this on sun-nets/sun-spots. Here is the README file: We are experimenting with a new mechanism for the distribution of some high-priority network bug fixes. UUNET is a company that provides connectivity to the Internet as well as through UUCP. There is a directory in ~ftp/sun-fixes on the machine uunet.UU.NET that currently contains the following files: -rw-r--r-- 1 sunfixes vendor 484687 Dec 14 1988 ddn.tar.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 sunfixes vendor 278528 Jan 13 20:20 gated.sun3 -rwxr-xr-x 1 sunfixes vendor 22646 Dec 14 1988 in.ftpd.sun3.Z -rwxr-xr-x 1 sunfixes vendor 30463 Dec 14 1988 in.ftpd.sun4.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 sunfixes vendor 1138 Jul 8 15:56 lib.msg.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 sunfixes vendor 252837 Jul 8 16:15 libc_pic.a.sun3.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 sunfixes vendor 246605 Jul 8 16:16 libc_pic.a.sun4.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 sunfixes vendor 245149 Jul 8 16:17 libc_resolv.so.sun3.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 sunfixes vendor 235129 Jul 8 16:18 libc_resolv.so.sun4.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 sunfixes vendor 17403 May 25 15:41 rcp.sun3.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 sunfixes vendor 20315 May 25 15:43 rcp.sun4.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 sunfixes vendor 25975 May 26 16:46 rdist.sun3.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 sunfixes vendor 33225 May 26 16:46 rdist.sun4.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 sunfixes vendor 6859 Feb 3 17:31 rpc.yppasswdd.sun3.Z -rw-rw-r-- 1 sunfixes vendor 7779 Feb 3 17:32 rpc.yppasswdd.sun4.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 sunfixes vendor 87571 Jun 6 14:59 sendmail.mx.sun3.Z -rwxr-xr-x 1 sunfixes vendor 110133 Jun 6 14:56 sendmail.mx.sun4.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 sunfixes vendor 71881 Jun 6 14:58 sendmail.sun3.Z -rwxr-xr-x 1 sunfixes vendor 99301 Jun 6 14:56 sendmail.sun4.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 sunfixes vendor 3415 Jul 8 16:27 wall.sun3.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 sunfixes vendor 3674 Jul 8 16:28 wall.sun4.Z -rwxr-xr-x 1 sunfixes vendor 7955 Jan 18 17:17 ypbind.sun3.Z -rwxr-xr-x 1 sunfixes vendor 9237 Jan 18 17:17 ypbind.sun4.Z ddn.tar is a "name server kit" that provides an updated version of the domain name server (BIND 4.8), and Sun-2 versions (which run on Sun-3s, SunOS 3.x) of sendmail that use the name server directly. ** These versions of sendmail are no longer supported. Please use the SunOS 4.x versions also in this directory. Also versions of ypserv that are less likely to hang when using inter-domain name resolution mode (in conjunction with the 4.0.1 libc.so). in.ftpd is the FTP daemon, with the bug fixed that allowed break-ins when anonymous FTP was enabled. These are 4.0 Sun-3 and Sun-4 versions. lib.msg is a short file describing how to install a new shared library. libc_pic.a.sun3 libc_pic.a.sun4 are versions of the archive format libraries that are position independent, so they can be linked to form new shared libraries with arbitrary modules replaced. These archives are current as of 4.0.3. libc_resolv.so.sun3 libc_resolv.so.sun4 are versions of the 4.0.3 shared C library that have had their gethostbyname and gethostbyaddr routines replaced with the name server resolver versions. They should work with 4.0, 4.0.1 or 4.0.3. rcp.sun3 rcp.sun4 Versions of the "rcp" program with a security hole fixed. Remember to install with setuid bit in /usr/ucb. rdist.sun3 rdist.sun4 Versions of the "rdist" program with a security hole fixed. Remember to install with setuid bit in /usr/ucb. rpc.yppasswdd.sun3 rpc.yppasswdd.sun4 are versions of the YP Password Daemon with a security hole fixed. sendmail.mx.sun3 sendmail.sun3 sendmail.mx.sun4 sendmail.sun4 are versions of sendmail that have various security holes fixed. This sendmail is based on UCB 5.59, with several security holes fixed, and performance improvements. wall.sun3 wall.sun4 are versions of the wall program with a security hole fixed. These programs should be installed setGID to the group tty in /usr/bin. ypbind.sun3 ypbind.sun4 are versions of the /usr/etc/ypbind program that by default do not allow the ypset command. Use -ypset option to re-enable. You can retrieve these files through anonymous FTP to the machine "uunet.uu.net". Log in with user name "anonymous", any password, "cd sunfixes", specify "binary" mode, and "get" the desired files. If you are a subscriber to UUNET's UUCP services, then you can use UUCP to retrieve these files. Alternatively, if you give Sun Customer Service a writeable directory on your system, they can FTP these files to you over the Internet. Note that files ending in ".Z" must be expanded by the "uncompress" command. If you experience problems, please make sure you have the latest version, and then please contact Customer Support with enough details so that we can recreate the problem.
