[comp.sys.sun] sun - Vax

jdp@cs.utexas.edu (Jim Pritchett) (05/25/89)

we have recently acquired some Suns (386i, 3, and 4) at work. However,
our knowledge of Suns and Unix is somewhat limited. I hope that someone
here can help me. We have Vax 8800s (VMS) networked with the Suns using
tcp-ip (Wollongong (sp?)) on Ethernet. I am using command windows on the
Suns to 'rlogin' onto the Vaxes. However, the command window doesn't act
like a VT-200 (tm) terminal (of course.) This makes certain things
difficult (e.g. editing with EVE and other screen oriented programs.) Is
there a VT emulator or something equivalent which would allow Vax programs
designed to use VT screen control commands to work properly in a Sun
window? It would be very helpful to have this capability.

If you have any helpful suggestions (e.g. trashing the Vaxes is NOT a
helpful suggestion, neither is using a real VT.), please Email to the
address below. My system does not get this newsgroup.

                                Thank you,
                                Jim Pritchett

If you should ever decide to aquire some Digital workstations in the
future...then you will never see problems like this one..from the very
instant that you plug your machine into the network...

THIS SORT OF CORPORATE GRANDSTANDING IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR
ON USENET AND SHOULD STOP IMMEDIATELY.

At least Sun has an entire product line built around their RISC
workstation technology so there's somewhere to expand to when you need it
(yeah yeah I know, Digital Has it Someday...) And their salespeople don't
try to backstab you and run over your head trying to sell VMS once they
get through the door by telling sweet lies to ignorant corporate types.

There, touche', now go away forever.

If you should ever sell your VMS machines you will never again see
problems like this one..from the very instant that you remove them from
the network.

But speaking constructively, NeWS comes with a VT102 emulator. Several tty
window managers (like the one called "screen" from the unix.sources
archives) emulate VT100s. Under X, xterm is close to a VT100. None of
these are perfect, or exactly what you requested, but they may be good
enough most of the time. Sun also sells a better VTxxx emulator, which
you can ask your salesman about.

You can make all the silly jokes you want. I work at Digital but I have a
Sun machine to test X11 applications. Digital even sells XUI for Sun
users! My comments were very honest ones...whether you like them or not!
I have purchased several 3rd party Sun packages that never met true VT
emulation specs....and yes, I spent good dollars on those stinking
packages! I am a Sun user...so please don't gimme that ****

As far VT terminals go, DIGITAL is the standard.

Another point, xterm is a hack that breaks many ANSI standards/specs.
Even the MIT folks know this...and it cannot emulate anything beyond a
VT100.
