We recently installed SunOS 4.0.3. We encountered a few problems along the way, but it mostly went smoothly. In the intructions, there are some specifications for the syntax used for various boot devices, such as st(,0,1) to be used instead of the example syntax st0(0,0,1). We tried going by the examples at first, and it does not work. Use the shorter syntax. We got it installed on two Sun 4's without any problems, and then went to install it on our Sun 3. The kernel failed to compile with Unresolved References in the link step. We limped along with the default kernel for a day or so, but figured out that we needed to run /usr/sunlink/dni/install/dni_install in order for the Sun DNI stuff to be included. Once we did that it compiled with no problems. We seem to have a mysterious lack of system messages being logged in /var/adm/messages since the installation, and I am sure there should be some. I seem to remember having this problem before, but I cannot remember the cause. Before the installation, we were having problems with our modems not hanging up and the system crashing, often when people dial in. The new release does not seem to have fixed this problem.
