For those you already got the Sparcstations for a while, I'm interested in knowing the reliability of the "pizza box" -- I mean the monitor, mouse, keyboard, scsi disk & the floppy drive (i.e. devices that involved day-to-day mechanical movements) -- in comparison to other Sun-3 diskless/dataless boxes. As for the motherboard, I would think that the reliability would be much higher since the chip count is so low but I'll also be interested in knowing if you guys got reliability problems with it. Any pointers will be much appreciated. Eric Ho Cognitive Science Lab., Princeton University voice = 609-987-2819 (x2987) email = eho@confidence.princeton.edu eho@bogey.princeton.edu regards. eric

Well, I don't know how much time anyone has had on these things but I've had one here for about three weeks now and it hasn't crashed once due to hardware failure. Any software problems early-on were attributable to setup fooling around. diti% uptime 3:52pm up 7 days, 19:30, 3 users, load average: 0.08, 0.01, 0.00 Jul 22 15:54 SunOS Release 4.0.3c (DITI) #2: Thu Jul 13 12:11:19 EDT 1989 Copyright (c) 1983-1989 Sun Microsystems, Inc. mem = 16384K (0x1000000) avail mem = 15384576 Ethernet address = 8:0:20:7:5:47 zs0 at obio 0xf1000000 pri 12 zs1 at obio 0xf0000000 pri 12 fd0 at obio 0xf7200000 pri 11 audio0 at obio 0xf7201000 pri 13 sbus0 at SBus slot 0 0x0 dma0 at SBus slot 0 0x400000 esp0 at SBus slot 0 0x800000 pri 3 sd0 at esp0 target 3 lun 0 sd0: <Quantum ProDrive 105S cyl 974 alt 2 hd 6 sec 35> sd1 at esp0 target 1 lun 0 sd1: <Quantum ProDrive 105S cyl 974 alt 2 hd 6 sec 35> le0 at SBus slot 0 0xc00000 pri 5 cgsix0 at SBus slot 1 0x0 pri 7 root on sd0a fstype 4.2 swap on sd0b fstype spec size 14700K dump on sd0b fstype spec size 14688K -Barry Shein Software Tool & Die, Purveyors to the Trade 1330 Beacon Street, Brookline, MA 02146, (617) 739-0202 Internet: bzs@skuld.std.com UUCP: encore!xylogics!skuld!bzs or uunet!skuld!bzs
