[comp.sys.sun] Tape Drive experience

roode@hydra.cf.uci.edu (Dana Roode) (07/14/89)

We need to purchase a 9 track 1600/6250bpi tape drive for use on a
Sun-4/330. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone willing to share their tape
drive stories (especially about SCSI drives or drives on 4/330s). What's
available? Are there tape drives you'd recommend staying away from? Are
there advantages of one over another? Our use will not be too demanding -
we just want a reliable drive to read tapes provided to us from a variety
of foreign systems.

Please reply directly to me.

The company I program for sells a variety of 9-trk drives. The brands we carry
currently are: Kennedy and Cipher. Both are good drives. The Kennedy is one of
the fastest re-positioning drives on the market and thus costs more than the
Cipher. If you need the speed, go for the Kennedy. The hardware engineer here
has installed many of the Kennedy's on Suns and he said he would be glad to
answer any questions you may have. Our number is 1-800-621-0039 or
1-617-729-5770. Ask for Bob Orman.

Jon.
