[comp.sys.sun] Alternate source for SS-1 internal drives wanted

mb@rex.cs.tulane.edu (Mark Benard) (07/20/89)

Has anyone identified an alternate source for the Quantum 105MB drives
that are used as the internal drives on the 3/80 and the SPARCstation 1?
Is Quantum the actual name of the company that makes the drives? Does
anyone have their address or telephone number?

Quantum is the actual manufacturer. The drive they use is the Quantum
Prodrive 105S (at least, that's the one in our 3/80). An alternative is
the CDC/Imprimis Swift 3.5" with embedded SCSI, which has a faster seek
time (15ms) and higher capacity (up to 200MB).

We ended up ordering the 200MB synchronous SCSI Swift for our diskless
SPARCstation 1's. The only problem I see is getting the right mounting
brackets to install the drive inside the machine. The SCSI and power
cables are easy to build and/or buy.

The new Fujitsu M261[1-4]S sound good, too.
