[comp.sys.sun] Questions on getting sun-source/dnimail to work properly

dennett@cs.rochester.edu (Charlie Dennett) (10/20/89)

I received the dnimail software from the sun source archives last
February. At that time I did not have a pressing need for it. I just
thought it would be nice to have for my machine that has Sun's DNI
software. I got it working then but not quite like it should. (The
version of dnimail I have is 2.0. This is supposed to run with DNI 6.0
and SunOS 4.0.)

Now I have a need for it so I would like to get it fully functional.

This is how it is currently set up. I have a 3/260 under 4.0.1 which is
my file server. I also have a diskless 3/60 also under 4.0.1. The DNI
software is installed on the 3/60. All the /dev/dni devices are on the
3/60. The 3/60 mounts the mail spool directory from the 3/260. I've (I
think) correctly followed the instructions for installing dnimail. I've
made the appropriate changes to the sendmail.cf files on both the Decnet
relay (the 3/60) and the 3/260. The instructions say that if I send mail
from, say, the 3/260 and address it in the form vmsnode!vmsuser, that
sendmail will figure out it is for Decnet and forward it to the dni host.
It does not do that. It thinks it is the Decnet relay and tries to open
the /dev/dni device in order to send it to the VMS machine. As I said
above, the /dev/dni devices exist on the 3/60, not the 3/260. If I don't
modify sendmail.cf on the 3/260, it does what it is supposed to do with
mail it does not know how to handle - it gets forwarded to the host
specified in the sendmail.cf file with the DR macro (major relay mailer).

The way I have been able to get it to work is to specify an address as
vmsnode!vmsuser@dnihost. The real decnet relay then receives the mail and
correctly passes it on to the vmsnode.

I'd like to be able to address mail in the generic form node!user (or even
user@node) and have sendmail route it to the decnet relay machine. The
instructions imply this should be the case, but it is not working this
way. If anyone has any experience in setting up the dnimail software, I
would appreciate hearing from you. If there is any interest, I'll
summarize it back to this group.

Thanks for any help.
