unix-wizards-request%brl-vgr@sri-unix.UUCP (06/12/83)
From: Mike Muuss <unix-wizards-request@brl-vgr> Greetings fellow wizards! After a long hiatus, (caused by the protocol changeover), the UNIX-WIZARDS mailing list has changed hosts and is back in business again. The United States Army Ballistic Research Laboratory (BRL) has picked up the list, and the new list moderator is Mike Muuss <Mike@BRL>. All old subscription information has been preserved. The relevant addresses for this mailing list are: <unix-wizards @ BRL> to speak to the list <unix-wizards-request @ BRL> to speak only to the moderator Mailing is on a "direct reflection" basis, so things will be transmitted shortly after they arrive. Note that messages are passed through our "list processor channel", which alters the SMTP "MAIL FROM" field to read "<unix-wizards-request@BRL-VGR>" so that failed mail messages will come to the moderator, rather than to people who submit to the list. At present, the machine doing the actual mailing is BRL-VGR, a VAX 11/780 running 4.1C BSD (soon to become a Purdue-style Dual-VAX). BRL-VGR is not directly connected to the ARPANET (net 10), so you may wish to check your gateway and host tables to make sure that you can route packets to VGR. BRL-VGR's primary InterNet address is 192.5.21.6 (a BRLNET1 host); BRLNET1 can be reached via the BRL-GATEWAY at 10.3.0.29. If you prefer, you can mail to <unix-wizards @ brl-vgr> directly. Geoff Goodfellow <Geoff@SRI-CSL> has graceously agreed to provide storage for the Unix-Wizards achives on his SRI-CSL machine. The archives will be in Tenex mail format. Mail for the current year will accumulate in [SRI-CSL] <UWIZ>MESSAGE.TXT;1 and at the end of each year, MESSAGE.TXT will be renamed to [SRI-CSL] <UWIZ>ARCHIVE-yy.TXT;1 where "yy" is the year number (eg, yy=83 for 1983). Anonymous FTP can be used with host SRI-CSL. Let me also take this opportunity to thank Geoff for his operating the UNIX-WIZARDS list for the past few years. The time and energy that he and SRI put into running the list has been sincerely appreciated by all of us. Best, -Mike Muuss
