We at least partially figured it out -- the Hitachi manual lies about SCSI id selection. It says that a set of jumpers on the bottom of the drive select the SCSI id (with negative logic - grrr), but we found that it seems to actually OR these with a set of undocumented jumpers on the back. I would suspect that removing the three documented jumpers completely might allow you to use the three on the back normally, but haven't been able to play extensively. This is the same sort of strangeness you see on NEC SMD drives, which have both a dial and a set of DIP switches for SMD address.
