We have recently attempted to connect our 4/280 to the campus internet. It's running SunOS-4.0.1. Seems that YP doesn't correctly use the nameserver for resolving machines outside our domain. I've already looked through sun-spots archives for old postings and found a patched shared library that was supposed to fix the problem. It did, but another sniggling bug in it caused other programs to fail. Is there an authoritative (i.e. supported by SUN) fix for this problem ? Has anybody used it sucessfully ? Next Question: Currently, our machine has the old weitek floating-point chip. Normally when you run programs that generate lots of underflow, there is a TREMENDOUS loss of performance. I spend an incredible amount of time trying to get around this problem and actually succeeded (for all but the most pathological cases)!! We are about to upgrade our CPU board and get a faster CPU with the floating-point chip from TI. What I need to know is this... Do the newer CPU's with the TI chips suffer from the same underflow problem as the older ones do ? If it does, is there anybody who has fixed it ? Also, if anyone wants (needs) my underflow patch for the Sun-4 weitek machines I'll be glad to mail it to you. /---------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Graduate School: It's not just a job...
