We have a problem with our Sun 3/180 currently running SunOS 4.0.3. We have had this problem since at least 3.5. We were hoping it would go away with newer versions but it hasn't. It even seems to be getting worse. Here's the outline. The root partition fills up. When fsck is run it finds a monsterous, unreferenced file. Being unreferenced it has no name. It does have an inode owned by root. We have as yet found no pattern to the existance or growth of this file save that once it starts it grows quickly. We tried shutting down all applications, any unnecessary daemons, and kicking off all the users. There were only about 5 processes left in the system. This file was growing at the time and it continued to grow even with everything not necessary to the minimal function of the operating system shut off. The check routines icheck, ncheck, and dcheck were run and the following information obtained; o the address of the inode o the inode is owned by root o the major and minor device numbers associated with the file are always 3,0 o links = 0 o entries = 0 o the check routines should provide a pid but HAVE NOT We have asked Sun for assistance with this but Sun has been of little help. We want to be able to find the process or the file (so we can look at it) or the bug. Any help much appreciated.
