The Berkey 2.(8/9)BSD UNIX for the PDP-11 has some user overlay hacks,
Unfortunatly I don't think they would be all that helpful as the are designed
to get around the pdp-11 32kwd addressing limitation (the entire text is
loaded and then remapped as required), but at least it would be somewhere
to start. The Math department here (UCLA) has rehashed the ucb overlays to
provide more different overlays (16 vs 8) a in general to clean it up. The
original overlay code is from Menlo-park (a 11/70 I believe).

If it's any interest to anyone, I have hacked out a version of the Berkeley
overlay scheme for 11s on System III allowing up to 32 overlays.
