I've heard that there is an MS-DOS emulation mode on the SS1 so that you can run MS-DOS applications on this machine. The speed of the emulation is said to be approximately that of an 8MHz AT. Does anybody have information on this ? Does anybody know how good the emulation is, i.e. which programs will run on the SS1 and which will not ? Any comments welcome. Please E-mail to me, i'll summarize if there is enough interest. Christoph Baumhof University of Karlsruhe, Western Germany E-Mail: ne08@dkauni2.bitnet

You can buy it from Sun and it is licensed to the hostid of the machine. It is not compatible to the emulation on the RoadRunner (Sun 386i) - so the emulated harddisk on the two machines are different etc. Also the emulation (?!) on the 386i is more compatible than on SS1, I tried some games which hang on the SS1 but run on the RR.

The MS-DOS emulation on the SS1 has a bug that affects a lot of software. I have not been able to get a reply from SUN either through my sysop or directly. A colleague in Japan has isolated the bug: DosWindows does not--or maybe just does not always--emulate the 80x86 RCR command correctly. Specifically, the 8088 source line RCR WORD PTR [SI],1 is emulated as SHR WORD PTR [SI],1. If anyone has information on a fix or update, reply to me directly, and I will summarise useful information.
