Wanting to run System III/V utilities under 4.?BSD - another reason to push for getting all the USG tty driver functionality under 4.?BSD (the ability to do things you just *can't do* under the V7-plus-frills 4.?BSD driver, like running in 8-bit CBREAK mode with XON/XOFF, or talking to a 5-bit Baudot line, or not having the output queues flushed when you hit your interrupt character, is another). Who at Berkeley should this be suggested to? (Note that it's not a licensing issue; they can implement the same interface with their own code, as they've already done with the USG "open" call, and besides it may be easier to add the USG functionality to the Berkeley driver than to add the Berkeley functionality (sensible handling of the erase character on printing terminals, sensible rubbing out of tabs on CRT terminals, ^R, etc.) to the USG driver - the latter looks messy, from the times I've done preliminary stabs at it.)
