[net.unix-wizards] Systems Industries equipment

etk@ittvax.UUCP (Ed Keegan) (05/24/83)

We are considering the purchase of equipment from Systems Industries.
Specifically, three 9751 414Mb disks (Fujitsu Eagle), a 9900
controller, and an SBI Interface. This purchase is in lieu of a
similar configuration from DEC: three RA81 456Mb disks and a UDA50
controller (neither of which DEC seems to be able to deliver). My
questions are:

1) Comments on experiences dealing with Systems Industries.

2) Quality, performance, etc. of the 9751 disks and 9900 controller.

3) Ditto above on the SBI Interface.

4) Service on the above.

Any and all comments, suggestions, horror stories, recommendations would
be greatly appreciated.

When we were using the 9900 (I believe that is the correct
number, anyway) with CDC9766's and a DG Eclipse S/140, they seemed
great when they worked but heaven help you when they weren't, which
seemed to be a sizeable portion of the time.

Among other board problems we had were:

	1. Random writes (header, data, whatever else) on read
commands, this one was never fixed alghough they sent the board back
to us "repaired" 3 times. The worst part about this one was it
only happened about once every 30 hours or so, ie. after all the
diagnostics have been run and the system is back operational again.

	2. Numerous drive confusion troubles, (was that drive 0 or 1?)

Dealing with SI over the phone was a royal pain, but once we
finely managed to get hold of the right people (VP in marketing) we
were able to get an FE to come out with new boards.
