[comp.sys.sun] 3/80 boot problems

giacobbe@pilot.njin.net (Jeff Giacobbe) (05/29/90)

This problem just reared its ugly head and I can't figure it out (a call
to Sun support offered some good advice, but so far no solutions)

We're running a Sun 4/260 server and four 3/80 diskless workstations. All
was well until last week. Suddenly, the 3/80's decided to hang. I tried
to reboot them but no luck (example):

	Using IP address {########}
	Booting from tftp server at {########}
	Downloaded 129,368 bytes from tftp server

	[....TOTALLY HANGS....]

The green status light on the front is blinking. Any clue as to what
could be happening. I'm sure that nothing was changed on the server; that
is, nobody screwed with the export directories and all the daemons
(including yellow pages) seem to be working fine. The physical network
connection must be working because it does perform the initial download.
It's as if the workstations are waiting for their root and swap
directories from the server, but the server just isn't sending them. Any
and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!

(email preferably ;-) )

Thanks in advance

Have you changed your YP master, or modded the maps in any way? It sounds
like either YP "/etc/bootparams" file is incomplete, (ie. doesn't contain
entries for the machines failing to boot), or your export permissions are
wrong; check with "exportfs" on the YP server.

Hope this helps.
