From: Rich Wales <v.wales@ucla-locus> One of our VAX 750's recently went for about 680 hours (FOUR WEEKS) running 4.1BSD without a reboot. It finally bit the dust when the power supply in its RK07 went out. Can anyone top this? (No fair if the machine in question just sits idle all the time, of course!) -- Rich

From: Mark Weiser <mark.umcp-cs@udel-relay> 2 weeks is the best we've seen on our 780. We bring it down every 2 weeks ourselves to fsck before the epoch dump.

I am surprised that Rich Wales finds an uptime of 4 weeks worthy of mention. Our 750 regularly runs from PM to PM (bi-monthly) without a re-boot. I have long since come to take this for granted. Perhaps he has just started using Unix and Vaxen. I remember the bad old days of 360's, 370's, PDP8's, and DEC 10's which could not run for more than a few days without a reboot. Unix on a Vax, however, is the most reliable computer system I have ever used. -- Mark ...{decvax,ucbvax}!decwrl!qubix!msc ...{ittvax,amd70}!qubix!msc decwrl!qubix!msc@Berkeley.ARPA

Not to gloat, but we have a Vax 11/750 that had over 133 DAYS of continuous
uptime until we took it down Saturday to install some hardware. Since we
bought it last August we have had only two software crashed (the famous
crash bug since fixed in the kernel) and no hardware crashes. Knock on wood.

Augh! My previous gloat was incorrect. It was not 133 days, it was 113.
Sorry.

Our 780 has been up longer than that: 10:20am up 38 days, 21:10, 15 users, load average: 1.89, 2.10, 1.76 and still going strong! Dan

Enuf, already! +-------------------------------------------------------+ | Real programmers never have their systems up | | over a week because they hack the kernel. | +-------------------------------------------------------+ Yeah, don't tell me, REAL programmers just patch the kernel.
