[comp.sys.sun] Memory leak problem on 4.XX

BYKAT@UTCVM.BITNET (Dr. A.Bykat) (06/30/90)

Not much consolation in it, but let me mention that I have same problem
too. As a matter of fact, I had reported this to SUN back in November 89,
but other that 'we'll look into it' I had no response.

It is my recollection that this problem occurs not only when I run SPE1.1
(with LIsp 3.01) but also in long sessions of Sunview. The machine becomes
extremely sluggish with vmstat reporting much less than 3MB on a 16Mb
machine (in fact configuration precisely like yours). Rebooting clears the
problem, and on a few occasions I managed to avoid reboot by mounting and
then unmounting a floppy. This is indeed very frustrating, especially as
SUN claims that a 4/60 with SPE is an alternative to an AI machine.

Maybe if all of us 'sufferors' start screeming, both the Sun Lisp group
and OS group will take notice, and start doing something about this!

The outcome of this ??memory leak?? problem is that the 12 MIP machine,
after some two or three day 'leaky' sessions takes some 30 seconds to
respond to typing vmstat (echoes 'vms', pauses for 30 seconds, echoes
stat, pauses again, an then responds with results).
