Several months ago, there was discussion about a client machine ypbinding to a server that is not in the same subnet. The solution was to run ypset SERVER_IP_ADDR right after the invocation of ypbind in the client's rc.local file. This works fine, except that if the server is rebooted or for some other reason, the connection between server and client is broken, the client will hang trying to reestablish the connection (it ignores the IP address set with ypset). This results on the owner of the client machine having to do a reboot. I figure there should be a simple way to periodically check the status of the client-server connection and re-ypset to the server if it is broken. Is this possible? Any suggestions to how one would go about it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Isidore Bendrihem VLSI Laboratory Columbia University
