Do the Archive Viper QIC-150 1/4" tape drives read QIC-11 format? I know they read QIC-24 and read&write QIC-150.

No, and that one bit me bad. I had duplicated a boot tape by reading it on /dev/nrst0 on one 3/50 and piping that via rsh and dd to /dev/nrst0 on another 3/50. The original tape was QIC-24 (nrst8) format. It was read OK because the drive does auto-density select on reading. The duplicate tape, however, was exactly what I told it; QIC-11 (nrst0) format. Since I could boot from the duplicate, I thought it was OK. But a new 3/60 with a Viper drive could not read it at all. The new drive reads only QIK-24 and QIK-150, it cannot read QIK-11. The Viper cannot read QIC-11. If QIC-11 is a necessity, look at the Wangtek 5150. This drive reads QIC-11, QIC-24, and QIC-150. The drive writes QIC-150. This is *not* a sun supported drive, but can be found at many third party Sun integrators (Artecon being one of them). The drive is functionally equivalent to the Viper.
