[comp.sys.sun] SLC scsi disk problem

srm@unify.com (Steve Maraglia) (10/08/90)

I recently installed 3 Sun 4/20's (SLC's), each with a 150Mb external scsi
disk (Seagate Wren III model 94161). We've been getting the follow disk
errors on all three systems. On one system the errors occur 3-4 times a
day and the others 1-2 errors every couple days. They don't appear to be
fatal errors as the system continues to run fine, however, I'm very
curious to know if anyone else has experienced this problem and if anyone
can explain why this is happening?

I had a similar peoblem with my SLC. I have a Fujitsu M2263S 670 MB
drive. I would get the occational SCSI reset. No probem since things
seemd to run normaly after that. Then I tried to dump my file system to
tape. No good! When the tape drive sees the SCSI reset it unloads and
rewinds the tape! This would not do! After much adjustment of jumpers, I
narrowed the problem to the Read-Ahead Cache feature on my drive. Since
disabling this feature, my drive has not timed out once. I hope this is
useful.
