I don't know if this belongs in this group, but my question does involve a Sun so I thought I'd start here. A user here regularly communicates with a colleague who has a Sun SPARCstation. They've been using the good-ole US-Mail-Net (ie. mailing tapes back and forth). This is due to the lack of Internet connectivity on the part of his colleague. We here at Lewis have Internet access, so I'm not sure what's involved in getting set up on it (I just request IP addresses from our local Network people). The remote colleague is working out of his home and therefore probably can't go the route of getting routers/bridges etc. Is there a way given a modem connection that he can gain IP access to do things like FTP and Telnet? [[Ed's Note: Your best bet is SLIP over high speed modems. I haven't done this myself, so I'll turn additional commentary over to someone more knowledgeable. :) -bdg]] Is UUCP something to look at in this instance? If so, what should be looked at? [[Ed's Note: UUCP doesn't require Internet access and it would give you the ability to send file (either using uusend or by encapsulating in mail), however, FTP, telnet, and anything else that needs a real connection wouldn't be usable. -bdg]] Gregory Fedor (216) 433-8468 FTS: 297-8468 Sverdrup Technology smfedor@lerc01.lerc.nasa.gov (128.156.10.14) NASA Lewis Research Center Cleveland, Ohio 44135
