[net.unix-wizards] Using Labelled MagTapes

Does anyone have or know of a mag tape driver/system on UNIX
which works with standard ANSI labeled tapes ?

There is a program written by Mike Duffy when he was at Harvard called
"vmstape" which reads and writes VMS/ANSI format tapes. It uses
some 4.1BSD-type magtape ioctls to skip and/or write tape marks, but
otherwise should port fairly easily. I just used it last week to extract
files from an ANSI tape--it worked just fine.

I can send it to you over the net if you get permission from the people at
Harvard (or you can arrange to send them a tape etc.)

Best,
Steve Dyer

The UNIX magtape driver can read individual files separated by tape marks.
A user-mode utility program can use this ability to decode the ANSI format.

It is possible that one of the USENIX distributions may have had an ANSI
magtape reading utility; I have occasionally been tempted to write one.

How about getting the magtapes written without ANSI labels etc.,
preferably fixed blocksize? Then "dd" or other standard utilities could
handle the tapes with a minimum of fuss.

I was at a local Dutch UNIX meeting on Friday, and a talk
was given by Dick Grune of the Vrije Universiteit of
Amsterdam (mcvax!vu44!dick) about a set of programs he has
written which handle ANSI standard tapes, let you copy a
tape to a disk-file and back without knowing the format of
the tape, etc.

We use it here for copying distribution tapes for the European
UNIX Systems User Group.

We have a program called "ansitar" which works like "tar"
but use standard labeled tapes. We are currently working

I'll post our "ansitar" program to net.sources ... if you
can't get if from that group let me know & I mail you a copy.

I have not been able to send copies of "ansitar.c" to
people on the ARPANET, if you still need a copy send
me a small magtape & I will mail it back .

Note: I am not the author of the program, it may have
been written by Carlise Trimble (decvax!ittvax!trimble)
