If I want a color SparcsStation, why might I want to buy a SparcStation 1+ with color versus a SS IPC ? (3 S-bus slots, GX option, any others ?) Otherwise the SS IPC seems like a cheaper buy. Is the GX option very valuable for just windowing around ? I need VME bus capability. How are these Sbus to VME converters ? I've heard they might be slow. Anyone have real experience with one ? (which company ?) Sun must be coming out with faster 'Stations soon to compete with DEC 5000's and MIPS, etc. What are the rumours ?

We asked the same question, and could not think of a good reason to keep on buying the 1+. We recently purchased 2 IPCs, and are very pleased with the performance and compatibility with our software. The graphics does seem slower without the GX (using Sunview), but for our applications (schematic and layout entry) it is not a real problem. Sun did indicate that 1+'s had a cleaner upgrade path for cpu upgrades that may come out. We have heard rumors that Sun is going to offer a GX option for the IPC, and is coming out with a new "Sun 2" which will be 1.5 to 2 times faster than a 1+ for about the same price. If so, we will definitely never order another 1+. 1+. Rod Rebello UUCP: ..!uunet!titan!rrebello Internet: rrebello%titan.UUCP@uunet.uu.net
