[comp.sys.sun] GUIDE software

edlz@cbnewsm.att.com (11/27/90)

Thank you for all the responses concerning DevGuide from Sun. There is,
though, a confusion about it.

The question was about OPEN LOOK version, which produces OPEN LOOK code.
Does it exist, to begin with ? Since confusion has occured I try to
clarify terms to the best of my knowledge (which may not be good enough,
since I was confused myself).

OPEN LOOK is intrinsics-compatible widget set and interface. Up to know,
the widget set was called Xwin. OL was originally Sun's thing but early on
was taken over by AT&T.

OPEN WINDOW was not 100% Xlib compatible (up to recently) user interface
by Sun inspired by AT&T, which offered a clear migration path from the
SunView applications via its X11/NeWS driver. Its programming interface
used to be called Xview.

Release 2.1 of OPEN WINDOW and 3.0 of OPEN LOOK makes them mutually
compatible and fully compatible with X11R4 at the intrinsics level and
both are to be fully supported by Sun.

Apparently, words OPEN LOOK were used too loosly in responses I have
gotten, and it was not clear at all, whether the DevGuide works _really_
with OPEN LOOK producing OL or at least Xwin code.

Correspondingly, my question is: is there a DevGuide software that works
with AT&T's OPEN LOOK 2.0 and later, or works with OPEN WINDOW 3.0, which
I will migrate to, when it is available?

BTW, in a process of asking this question I discovered that many of us,
newcomers, into the the OPEN LOOK world are royally confused about
AT&T/Sun relations concerning UNIX and OPEN LOOK issues. Since we are
under the impression that we suppose to know it, we are afraid to ask
those questions. How did I discovered it - I swallowed my pride and asked
around and, guess what?, did not get answers. So, if somebody explains the
status quo and how it got this way, it would be very helpfull, too.
