I wanted to use the CD-ROM manual pages on SunCD Demo Disc-1.0, and set MANPATH to /cdrom/manual_pages. However, man(1) would always reformat manual pages even though the cat? directories contained the preformatted versions. As suggested by tessi!joey@nosun.West.Sun.COM (Joe Pruett) and acheng@ncsa.uiuc.edu (Albert Cheng), the modification times on the files in cat?/* are BEFORE those of the man?/* files, i.e. man is forced to do a reformat. So Sun blew it on this (minor) point ! Workaround (thanks, Joe): The easiest fix is to create a new directory on your real disk, and create links for all the cat directories, but no the man directories, then set MANPATH to point to the new directory. By the way, it would have been SO nice, if the SunOS 4.1 CD-ROM had the unpacked manual pages for easy access, in addition to the tar-files needed for installation ! With best regards, Ole H. The worst part of this (which hasn't been mentioned so far) is that the man pages on this CD are for SunOS 4.0.3 and not 4.1 !! For those running 4.1, this makes the CD useless for subbing for man pages, which is a real shame given that that is something the CDROM is particularly well suited for.
