When Sun shipped 3/80 workstations, it was with 100nS SIMMs. I don't remember for certain, but 3/60 workstations may have even had 120nS SIMMs. To make everything work reliably this would have necessitated quite a few wait states on any memory access. Especially so with the 3/80, which doesn't have the external cache of the 3/60. So ... it seems that with the cheap 70ns and 80ns SIMMs that are now available a workstation could run somewhat faster if the number of waits were reduced to reflect the higher performance RAM. Does anybody know if it is possible to make a simple hardware change that will reduce the number of wait states ? George Pontis ( geo@moldev.com )
