[comp.sys.sun] Moderator's Notes

rgreene@ricecsvm.rice.edu (Bob Greene) (11/16/90)

In order to try to remedy the continued poor response time and backlog
that Sunspots has been encountering over the last six months, I have made
a few changes.

The Usenet news group "comp.sys.sun" will now be posted from the host
brchs1.bnr.ca instead of titan.rice.edu as before. This makes the files I
have to play with local instead of remote and frees me to speedily process
incoming requests.

Note that *all* of the addresses stay the same:

    Submissions: sun-spots@rice.edu
    Add/Drop : sun-spots-requests@rice.edu
    Moderator : rgreene@ricecsvm.rice.edu

Any questions regarding Sunspots should be addressed to one of the
addresses above, not root@rice.edu or root@brchs1.bnr.ca - these System
administrators are being nice enough to let Sunspots use their machines -
don't make them forward mail to me.

The backissue archives and source archives will still be maintained on
titan.rice.edu (128.42.1.30). However, due to the remote nature (as I
mentioned above), updates announced in Sunspots (comp.sys.sun) may not be
immediately available - please allow 24-48 hours before you mail to me
asking where they are (I do sometimes forget to move things there, so if
you don't see them at that point send me a reminder :)).

These changes should improve Sunspots response time. I hope to restore the
turn around to the point it was at early this year within the next week or
so.

Finally, just a few off the cuff remarks. First, a big thank-you to a Sun
employee in the Dallas area who wishes to remain nameless who put up with
my strange hours and all sorts of inconveniences in order to provide me
with Internet connectivity during these first few months in a new city.
Without his help, what has been a slow period for Sunspots would have been
a totally dead period for Sunspots.

And not to let Sun go away totally unscathed - I have to admit I was
shocked and appalled to find that Sun Microsystems has now adopted an
"official policy" of not allowing posting to Sunspots by Sun employees. I
have not yet begun to grapple with this issue, but I feel that it should
be dealt with - the input of Sun employees was one of the things that made
this an attractive avenue for posing questions.

Please except some delays during the upcoming Christmas break (22 Dec
thru 2 Jan). There will also be a big flush right around the beginning of
the new year when I close out all the v9 issues and start on v10. (This
will only affect digest subscribers - c.s.s. readers won't notice this).
