[comp.sys.sun] Crashing Sparcstation 2

rjv@icad.com (Ralph Verrilli) (01/04/91)

We recently received a number of Sparcstation 2's. We have had problems
with all of them crashing, sort of like they experience a power failure.
Has anyone else experienced this problem with the Sparcstation 2?

If you have any information for me please email directly to me as I do not
read this group on a regular basis. Thanks.

By the way, we are running a large lisp application using Franz Common
Lisp.

We had a similar problem (all our new SS2's were crashing in a weird sort
of way - the screen would go blank and the machine wouldn't respond to
anything not even l1-a). The culprit turned to be an old version of tcsh.
I'm not sure when it was compiled (we don't have the source code and
somebody who's gone now installed it) but it was over a year and a half
ago.

Anyway, I suspect that our old tcsh was doing something funky with the
interupts that has changed on the SS2. It seems like maybe your Franz
Lisp might be doing the same sort of thing.

We just got version 5.20 of tcsh and now the machines work just fine.

We have had exactly the same problem. The screen would go blank, the audio
port would pop and the machine died. The only thing that would get the
machine up agian is a reboot. We tried all sorts of things to fix the
problem eventually we found that the generic kernel stopped it from
happening.

We don't.
