I'm looking to buy more memory for my SS1. Does anyone know: 1) does it use standard 1M X 8 boards? 1M X 9? same as IBM? Apple? 2) what kind of 4M boards does it use? 3) anyone know any reliable & cheap 3rd party vendors? w/ corporate rates? (Sun's list prices: 4M (4 1M boards): $1000, 16M(4x4M): $3500

(100ns or better for 4/60 (ss1), 70ns or better for 4/65 (ss1+).) I like Technology Works in Texas for SIMMs. Cant remember the number, but they advertise in MacWeek each week. They have good customer service, if you need it for SIMMSs... :-) Ken Stamm (ken@slhisc.uucp, sun.com!gotham!slhisc!ken) (212)341-3868 Shearson Lehman Brothers, 390 Greenwich St. 4W, New York NY 10013

(Check out the stock chips in your 4/65.) We use 80 ns chips as they are only ~$5-10 more and I sleep better :-) My salesman says that the 4/70 (SS2) uses 70ns or better (just in case you think you might upgrade in the future; but don't forget that all 4/70's will come with 16 MB so the point is moot.) We have been paying the extra ~$30-40 for 70 ns 4M X 9 chips to plan against upgrades. Robert L. Howard rhoward@msd.gatech.edu

Memory In order to achieve its high performance, SPARCstation 2 requires 80 nano-second SIMM modules. BUT NOT ALL 80-NANOSECOND SIMM MODULES CAN BE SUPPORTED. Does anyone know which 80ns SIMMs *do* work? Scott Weikart 415-322-9069 pyramid!cdp!scott cdp!scott@labrea.stanford.com

Thanks to all of you who responded to my request for SS1+ memory vendors. Namely (I apologize if I left anyone out): ric@cs.arizona.edu girish@heawk1.gsfc.nasa.gov brendan@cs.widener.edu ne201ph@prism.gatech.edu hughes@azroth.csee.usf.edu steinour%cc.gettysburg.edu@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU steve@hanauma.stanford.edu dan@rose3.Rosemount.COM kandt@ai-cyclops.JPL.NASA.GOV slhisc!ken@marob.masa.com I ended up buying 16M of 4Mx9 80ns chips from Chip Merchant for $880. They have a 5 year warranty. This is not as good as Dataram's liftetime warranty including cost of repairs of damage incurred by the chips, but how often does memory damage other hardware anyway. KMO had the same price, but I made my choice based on the recommendation from girish@heawk1.gsfc.nasa.gov. One board I bought was a bit difficult to install, as it was slightly too thick for the slots (needed to be filed down slightly) but otherwise I am quite satisfied. Shipping took about 2 weeks from faxing them a PO, but they also have rush shipping available. New prices for Chip Merchant, KMO Technology, and Dataram are below, then I re-sorted the lists. Of course, the reports are not exactly accurate, as other vendors' prices have probably changed as well.
